Ideal Community Part 1: Collaborative Representation vs. Authoritative Jurisdiction

30 Dec

What would this look like? Well, I would opt for an autonomous community…kind of like a commune-I know, hippie, hippie. But I feel societies work best the smaller they are because people are being heard individually rather than massively. So, there should be representatives, or people who’s duty would entail keeping the ideals of the community in tact. Of course, the draw here would be that they have no more power than the average citizen-no special treatment, secrecy, etc. But absolute power may corrupt absolutely if there is only 1 rep. So how about 4 or 5, for a community of about 20-30? This way, the reps are being held accountable not only by their community and the citizens, but also by their coworkers.

It would appear that our current government is run by authority. That is, people in leadership roles of our country are given more power in correlation to their authoritative position. Obviously this seperation between themselves and the citizens at large would lead to feelings of entitlement and superiority. With that kind of sentiment controlling a country while trying, simultaneously, to achieve an ideal such as democracy, the result is hypocrisy. In democracy, the notion of justice, fairness, and equality are the things it strives to achieve. With the apparent disparity found between the authoritative leaders with greater power and the citizens they jurisdict with weaker power, there is already an injustice within the most fundamental part of democracy–fairness of government.

So, if there were say, people appointed solely to make sure things were going as the community wished, they would be neither authoritative nor slaves to the people. They would be citizens, given the task at upholding the fundamental objectives appointed by the people as a whole (and something more precise than majority maybe). They wouldn’t possess authority because they would be explicitly equal. The four representatives would hold each other accountable and the people would hold those four accountable, thus collaberative representation…

(I’m still working on this one.)
